Smoking in public places
M.H. Bari West Dhanmondi, Dhaka
Smoking is undoubtedly very harmful to health and it has been medically proved that smoking causes some fatal diseases like high blood pressure, cancer, heart attack, asthma etc. Considering the bad affects of smoking a social awareness programme has already been lunched by the WHO and its member countries. Smoking has been prohibited in many places such as educational institutes, hospitals and public offices. An anti-smoking campaign is going on all over the world. Considering the fact, the Bangladesh government also made it obligatory for all manufacturers of cigarettes to inscribe, "Smoking is injurious to health" on their packets and very recently the Bangladesh government has enacted a law prohibiting smoking in all public places. No doubt, it's a praiseworthy step. We welcome this move wholeheartedly. Smoking in public places has been banned, but few people seem to go by the law.The authorities concerned should look into the matter.
