Katyani puja begins Nov 7
Our Correspondent, Magura
Preparation for observance of traditional Katyani Puja is going on in full swing here. The puja is observed as the greatest religious festival of Hindu community in this region for the last 52 years. Although Durga puja is the greatest religious festival of Bengali-speaking Hindu community in Bengal, Magura district is an exception. With passage of time, Katyani Puja has become the main religious festival here. The puja is being observed every year one month after the Durga puja. This year it will begin on November 7 and will end on November 11. Shatish Chandra, a rich man of Parnanduali village in Magura Sadar upazila, first introduced it. He performed the puja through festivities 52 years back. It is popular in the area since then. Every year thousand of Hindu community people, even form across the border, assemble here to celebrate the puja. Tastefully decorated gates and arches are erected at different puja pandals and at important points in the town. Idols of Katyani puja are similar to that of Durga puja. To mark the Katyani puja, Worldnet Computer in Magura has opened a website-- www.geocities.com/katyanimag. The e-mail address is [email protected].
