Women's issues under the spotlight

Rural girls in the subcontinent often have to contend with problems such as early marriage, dowry, trafficking and abuse. The theme was reflected in the play Alta staged by Jolshiri.

Alta was staged on October 1 at the Marble Room of Hotel Sheraton as part of the three-day conference arranged by Zonta International, an organisation dealing with women and children's issues around the world. Professor Iazuddin Ahmed, President of People's Republic of Bangladesh, inaugurated the conference.

Based on the concept of Dr Shireen Huq, young playwright Mohiuddin Ahmed's play Alta narrates the story of an impoverished young girl, whose parents are on the hunt for an eligible groom. The story unravels as Gulzar, a fraud, marries her, without dowry. However, the elderly man has duped several girls like Alta into sham marriages, and handed them over to human traffickers.

Director Ashik E Elahi has unfolded Alta using narrative in the form of a palagaan presented by a Gayan (rural bard) and a choir. Elahi needs to develop his potential. Young artistes of the drama need to concentrate on both vocal and physical acting to make the play interesting.

As part of the Eighth District Biennial Conference 2005, with delegates from Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka, several programmes such as seminars, workshops and cultural events have been initiated by the organisation focusing on women's issues. The aim of this conference is to improve the status of women.
