Hogg, Tait ruled out

Australia Monday suffered a double injury blow with the withdrawals of all-rounder Brad Hogg and fast bowler Shaun Tait for this week's Super Series cricket one-dayers against a World XI. Left-arm spinner Hogg tore cartilage in his left knee and will return home to Perth for surgery scheduled Tuesday, while Tait has an injured right shoulder. Hogg's place in the team was taken by Victorian leg-spinner Cameron White, while NSW paceman Stuart Clark replaced Tait. "I will get back to Perth tonight and get straight on the operating table tomorrow lunch-time so it's disappointing, but that's the way it goes," Hogg said at the official tournament launch here Monday. Hogg is expected to be sidelined for between three to six weeks. Australian skipper Ricky Ponting said White was likely to come into the team and play on Wednesday. "There's a good opportunity for an up-and-coming leg-spinner to get a chance to play some cricket for Australia, so with a negative there always comes a positive, so that's the positive side to it." Tait, who played in the last two Ashes Tests, experienced pain while bowling for his South Australian club on Saturday and again while training here on Monday. Diagnostic scans revealed Tait had torn cartilage in the shoulder and he was expected to undergo surgery to repair the problem later in the week. Cricket Australia's medical staff anticipate that he will be sidelined for a minimum of three months. Clark was called into the Australian squad during the recent Ashes series in England as cover for the injured Glenn McGrath.
