'Ensure security during Durga Puja'


Chittagong Mahanagar Puja Udjapan Parishad here yesterday urged the government to ensure security during the Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of Hindu community.

The Parishad leaders made this appeal at a press conference at the Chittagong Press Club.

They also urged the government to implement their 17-point demand including an end to repression on woman, four-day government holiday on Durga Puja, dissolution of Hindu Welfare Trust and announcement of Dhakeshwari Mandir as the national temple and Sitakunda as the national sacred place. The Chandranath temple is located at Sitakunda.

They demanded creation of Hindu Foundation and an end to discrimination against the Hindu community.

They also requested the government for exemption of utility bills at all Puja mandaps (alters).

Parishad leaders said all necessary steps were taken to observe puja peacefully at 202 mandaps in the city and assured the Muslim community that the sanctity of the holy Ramadan won't be undermined during the puja.

Parishad General Secretary Advocate Chandan Talukder read out a written statement.

Parishad leaders Shadhan Dhar, Bimol Kanti Dey, Bholanath Bishwas, Mridul Dey, Sujit Bhattachariya, Gonesh Dey and Ashish Bhattacharya were present.
