Didar Hossain struck in the second half as Bangladesh Army retained the National Hockey Championship title with a solitary goal victory against Dhaka in an absorbing final at the Maulana Bhasani National Stadium yesterday.Didar hit the board in the 56th minute and it was enough for Army to celebrate their eleventh national championship triumph since the competition was introduced in 1974. The energetic striker made no mistake to find the target from a rebound after the Dhaka defense partially parried off a fierce hit from Rahajuddin. Apart from the only goal, both teams created some good chances in either half in an entertaining match. Army came close to scoring in the third minute but a Sirajul Islam shot deflected off the side post. Didar also spoiled a golden chance when failed to connect a Thuinu Marma pass from handshake distance. On the other hand, Army custodian Wahidul Islma foiled Dhaka's first attempt when he saved a Mustafa close range hit. Promising national striker Russel Mahmud Jimmy also frustrated Dhaka by driving the ball wide in front of an empty net. Army came out with more vigour after the break and their perseverance eventually paid off. Dhaka got one last chance to take the game into extra time when a powerful drive from Mustafa's hit the side net creating confusion among the players and match officials alike. But umpire Rashid Khan after consulting with his deputy rightly disallowed the goal amidst protest from Dhaka players. State Minister for Youth and Sports Fazlur Rahman distributed the prizes among the winners. Chief of Air Staff and Bangladesh Hockey Federation (BHF) president Air Vice-Marshal Fakhrul Azam, BHF general secretary Shamsul Bari, chairman of sponsor ABS Group AB Siddique Chowdhury were also present.
