AL, allies demand arrest of Altaf, Muhiuddin

The Awami League (AL) and its allies in the 14-party combine yesterday demanded the arrest and legal action against former home minister Altaf Hossain Choudhury and Islami Oikya Jote leader Moulana Muhiuddin for their links to militant kingpin Mufti Abdul Hannan, who was arrested on Saturday.The opposition alliance made the demand at a meeting at the Bangabandhu Avenue AL office, chaired by AL Presidium member Abdur Razzak. The meeting in a resolution referred to the statement of the arrestee to newsmen and said Altaf and Muhiuddin cooperated with bomber Hannan, who is also a convict in the case for assassination attempt on the then prime minister and AL President Shiekh Hasina at Kotalipara in Gopalganj. They gave him shelter ignoring the law of the land and judgement of court. The 14-party also said the ruling alliance was directly involved in plotting the assassination bid by Hannan, who had been evading arrest for long as the coalition government sheltered him. The meeting was attended by AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil and Organising Secretary and Abdul Mannan, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon and Secretary Bimal Biswas, JSD President Hasanul Hoque Inu and General Secretary Syed Jajar Sazzad, General Secretary of Samya Badi Dal Dilip Barua, General Secretary of Gonotantri Majdur Party Jakir Hossain and Gono Forum Presidium member Mofizul Islam Kamal.
