Mili Murder Case
Hearing cancelled amid chaos

The hearing on the naraji (no-confidence) petition against the final report in schoolgirl Mafruza Begum Mili's rape and murder case could not be held yesterday amid chaos in the courtroom.

The Special Court on Women and Children Repression Prevention fixed October 10 for fresh hearing and asked the lawyers to choose three counsels on each side for moving the case.

Meanwhile, over one hundred people demonstrated on the court premises to protest the final report that recommended release of the three accused.

As the hearing began, the lawyers on both sides locked in scuffles inside the court over the issue of defence lawyers' plea for hearing.

Several lawyers led by Saiful Alam Shelly and Israfil Hossain Mollik pleaded for accepting the Naraji petition and holding trial of the case cancelling the final report that created suspicion.

Their opponents Advocate Hamidul Haque and Nazrul Islam prayed for recording the final report and a hearing on the naraji petition.

Mili's father Mansur Rahman Mollah, the plaintiff, in the Naraji petition alleged that the final report that was made on the basis of a suspicious DNA test, was motivated and influenced.

He claimed that documents that were sent for DNA tests were not the same as those were seized.

During the demonstration on the court premises against the final report, police intercepted the protesters when they tried to reach the court building.

They also held a rally, which was addressed, among others, by Mili's mother Hasina Begum, freedom fighter Zalal Uddin, Mohila Parishad General Secretary Kalpana Roy and women leader Morjina Khatun.

Nine-year old Mili was raped and killed in the city on May 3 this year.
