Downpour causes water-logging

Heavy shower for about two hours in the capital yesterday caused serious water logging and traffic congestion in Motijheel Shapla Chattar, Basabo, Goran, Madartek, Khilgaon (near the fly-over), Kamalapur, Mirpur Section10, Gulistan, Fakirapool and surrounding areas.The rain that started at noon paralysed city life as many places went under knee to waist deep water. In some cases motor engines failed to function as water entered the exhaust pipes. As a large number of vehicles plied the city streets yesterday, which was unusual for a weekly holiday, their slowing down by heavy rain led to traffic congestion also in some other areas of the city, especially Mohakhali, Farmgate, Gulshan, Dhanmondi and Banani. The weather office recorded 90 millimetres of rainfall in the capital from 6:00am to 6:00pm yesterday. Meanwhile, the weather office forecast cloudy weather across the country and heavy rainfall with thundershower at many places today. Sandwip in Chittagong, Mymensingh, and Khepupara in Patukhali experienced 57mm, 40mm and 30mm rainfall yesterday, the weather office said.
