Bus fares go up today

Bus operators will start taking increased fare across the country from today.

Now per kilometre fare for 52-seater bus will be Tk .80, up from pervious Tk .72 and for mini-bus it will be Tk .83, up from Tk .75.

A high-powered communications ministry meeting with the Minister Nazmul Huda in the chair approved the new bus fare rate on Thursday.

The meeting also warned that stern action, that may include cancellation of route permit, will be taken if anyone takes fare higher than the fixed rate.

Following the latest fuel price hike, a meeting between the communications minister and bus owners on September 14 took the decision to increase 11 percent bus fare.

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) will provide the new bus fare chart, copy of which has to be posted on every bus and minibus.

Fare is to be taken as per the chart, BRTA Chairman M A Momen said, adding that legal action will be taken if anyone takes extra fare by-passing the chart.

Many bus operators are already taking increased fare.
