Aiyar's visit may be deferred again

Indian Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar's planned visit to Dhaka might be deferred by a couple of days for his preoccupation in New Delhi.

He was scheduled to arrive here on a two-day visit on September 5.

Energy Adviser Mahmudur Rahman told the news agency that Aiyar's visit might be rescheduled for September 7-8.

He said if he comes on September 5, he will have to fly back to Delhi the same day because of his important engagement in Delhi the next day. But if rescheduled to come on September 7, he may stay in Dhaka for two days. Dhaka was learnt to have preferred his two-day visit.

Aiyar will be visiting Dhaka at the invitation of Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan.

Visit by an influential Minister like Aiyar after Indian External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh is seen important in the context of Bangladesh-India bilateral relations.

The main agenda of his talks with Bangladeshi leaders is likely to be focussed on tri-nation gas pipeline. Dhaka has earlier set three preconditions for installing the pipeline from Myanmar to India through Bangladesh.
