Shafi points finger at Maruf, Shahid


Shafiqul Alam alias Shafi, a suspect in the sensational Jamal Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury abduction case, yesterday made a statement before a magistrate, indicating again Maruf Nizam's role and Shahid Chairman's involvement in the incident.

Shafi made the confessional statement at the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate until 8:25 last night. Metropolitan Magistrate Md Akram Hossain recorded the five-hour deposition in nine pages, but details could not be known immediately.

Earlier, Shafi told reporters on Chittagong Court Building premises Shahid Chairman had confirmed Jamal's death one month into his abduction following 'a Tk 1 crore promise' made by Maruf, brother of BNP lawmaker Sarwar Jamal Nizam of Anwara.

Nine people including him took part in the abduction plotted by Helal and carried out under direct supervision of Shahid Chairman, he added. The other six are Amar Das, Nazim, Yunus Babu, Ishaq, Sobhan Driver and Ali.

Sobhan, driver of the microbus used in the abduction, and Kala Mahbub repeatedly mentioned Shahid as the culprit, who supervised the abduction and murder, coordinating between field level abductors and Maruf.

Jamal, magnet and BNP leader of Chittagong south district unit, was abducted on July 24, 2003 from Chandgaon Residential Area.
