First online radio of the nation

Ever thought about an online radio broadcasting local programmes? ekusheyradio. com, a sister concern of Reflex, an internet service provider, recently went on air with their own programmes dedicated for the non-resident Bangladeshi (NRB) community.

A team of ten dedicated people working for the online radio at present have invested around $30,000 USD for the purpose of streaming the live audio channel over the internet. The online radio airs folk songs, talk shows, news and many more, which they plan to produce themselves.

It's been a month since their launch and the response has turned to be around 750 users per day on average. Ekusheyradio.com has not been completed as yet with their website design but they have already started streaming programmes over the net, which also includes broadcasting of voice commentary from Ten Sports of the cricket match between Bangladesh and Srilanka being held at Srilanka.

Shared bandwidth lowers the speed of your internet which can take time into buffering the radio programmes but Reaz Haider, CEO of Ekusheyradio told StarTech that they are planning to introduce 'Real Audio Streaming' which can buffer the programmes before broadcasting in personal computers.

At present using the licensed server of Microsoft they are streaming the audio directly through 'Windows Media Player', which buffers the audio during live performance that creates a gap in reception in case of slow internet connection.

"At present, the services we are providing to our audiences are absolutely at our own expense but we hope to receive funds from NGOs who have already offered us and otherwise our source of income would be from sponsors and advertisements", said Haider when asked about the financial aspects of the web service.

"We are planning to go for a terrestrial radio broadcasting within a year that would take over the online audio streaming but we shall continue to provide the 24 hour online radio service and broadcast it from the terrestrial radio service, which would make it further professional", said Haider adding up that the government has already deregulated the terrestrial radio providing licenses to BBC Bangla, Voice of America and DW a Japanese radio band.

Haider claims the technology they are using has been their own creation, which if other organisations such as the non government organisations (NGOs) wish, can use for their internal communication.

"Using the Ekushey Streaming Technology, the NGOs can communicate with their branch offices around the country", said Manzur Alam, system administrator, Reflex. "We can provide the service locally at a lower cost than what they would have incurred if bought from abroad", he added.

We are using a HP server with Audigy soundcard dedicated for the audio streaming at 1.5 megabytes per second bandwidth.
