Irregularities at Jagannath Hall
Students lay siege to provost house

Resident students of Jagannath Hall of Dhaka University (DU) yesterday staged demonstration and laid siege to provost's residence in protest against alleged irregularities in the hall. Around three hundred students brought out a procession and chanted slogans demanding resignation of the provost for failing to ensure water, electricity, hygienic foods and fair seat allotment. They also threatened to go for tougher agitation if their demands are not met within two days. The students alleged that they had been suffering from irregular supply of water and electricity for last few days but the hall authorities are quite indifferent to their difficulties. They said the authorities also did not take any steps to improve their foods although a mobile court found rotten fish, meat, curries and overall unhygienic condition in six canteens of the hall on August 23 and jailed four canteen managers. One of the students told The Daily Star that seats were not allocated in last four years turning the hall as the safe heaven for outsiders and cadres. "Most of the time in last few weeks, water and electricity were not available and today (Friday) we staged demonstrations as supply of water and electricity has totally stopped," said another student. Provost Nim Chandra Bhoumik could not be contacted despite repeated efforts.
