‘Join hands to keep youths away from drug, crime’

Speakers at a workshop here called for united efforts by all, including the administration, to prepare comprehensive programmes locally so that youths can be properly trained and gainfully utilised.

Youths, a vital force in the society, are assets. But they can be misguided and ruined any time because there are so many harmful things around them.

If they are properly educated and trained, the nation will get competent and skilled manpower. If not, the nation will ultimately suffer, they said.

The day-long workshop on 'Preparation of Jubo Morcha and Human Rights, Good Governance Vigilance Team' held at Kushtia Zila Parishad Hall on Monday.

The speakers said representatives of all sections in the society can join hands and launch a campaign to keep the youths away from bad things like drug use and crime and draw them into good and nation building programmes. The administration can take the initiative in this regard, they said.

SETU, a local NGO, organised the workshop under its Youth Animation for Social Justice (YASJ) project with assistance from Dhaka-based NGO Manusher Jonno. SETU Executive Director MA Quder presided over the discussions.

At least 100 youths from different areas of the district took part in the workshop.

Samim Fatema, Deputy Director of Social Welfare Department in Kushtia, addressed the workshop as chief guest. The speakers included ICT specialist Sahajhan Siraj, World Water Club President Simon, its secretary Clady, cultural activist Sathi Nazrul Islam, The Daily Star's Kushtia correspondent Amanur Aman and SM Arif Mehmud, Staff Correspondent of local daily Andoloner Bazar.
