Flood hits Gaibandha again
30,000 marooned as Brhamaputra, Ghagot mark rise

Onrush of water from the upstream and heavy rain have flooded many areas in five upazilas in Gaibandha again. Over 30,000 people in remote shoals of Brhamaputra have been marooned.

According to Water Development Board (WDB) sources, the Brhamaputra and the Ghagot rivers swelled by 42 cm and 25 cm respectively in last 24 hours ending at 6 am yesterday. Transplanted Aman seedlings on 700 hectares of land have gone under floodwater.

The affected areas are Kanchibari, Sreepur, Chadipur, Kapasia and Haripur in Sundeganj Upazila; Kamajani and Dhutichora in Gaibandha Sadar; Sayedpur and Kanchipara in Fulchari; Haldia, Jumarbari, Gobindi and Chinirpotal in Shagahta and Khalshi in of Gaibindaganj upazila. Several hundred houses in the low-laying areas have gone under water.

The sources said Ghagot river embankment is threatened at several points due to pressure of swelling water. Cracks have developed at several points at Pashim Kamornai, David Company Para, Nutun Para and Sonail, they said.

The increasing water level in Brahmaputra has aggravated erosion in Sayedpur, Kamajani, Haldia Kanchpara and Balashi areas.

WDB has started dumping sandbags to check erosion of Gaibandha town protection embankment by the Ghagot at David Company Para.

People in Dharmapur village in Gobindagnaj were seen dumping sandbags yesterday to mend a crack in the embankment.

This is the second onslaught of flood in the district in the current season.
