Wasa continues drive: Tk 10 lakh realised

A mobile court of Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) on the third day of its drive against bill defaulters realised about Tk l0 lakh at the Motijheel commercial area in the city yesterday.The mobile court headed by Wasa's first class magistrate Kazi Wasiuddin conducted the drive in seven commercial holdings, including the Modhumoti Cinema, and realised Tk 10 lakh from them, out of arrears bill of Tk 31 lakh. The court detained M Babul, manager of the Modhumita Cinema, until the owner Sirazuddin Ahmed gave a cheque for Tk five lakh to Wasa against the arrears of Tk 6 lakh. The court also conducted the drive at NCC Bank head office for the arrears of Tk 3 lakh. Owner of the building paid Tk 1 lakh in cash and gave a cheque for Tk 1 lakh against the arrears. Owner of Bangladesh Waterways building gave a cheque for Tk 1.80 lakh against the arrears of Tk 3.28 lakh. The owner of another building at Dilkusha gave a cheque for Tk 1 lakh against the arrears of Tk 2.50 lakh. Different government and private commercial organisations and household owners owe a total of Tk 200 crore arrears bill to Wasa. Of Tk 200 crore, the private business organisations and household owners owe Tk 180 crore while the government organisations Tk 20 crore, Wasa sources said. A Wasa official said there are 2.17 lakh water connections in the city. But Wasa has only 30 percent sewerage connection capacity. Wasa is conducting the drive in order to alert other bill defaulters, particularly whose dues are at least Tk 1 lakh, so that they spontaneously pay the arrears, sources said. The drive will continue the drive in the capital and Narayanganj by turn, the sources added.
