August 17 Serial Bomb Blasts
Criminals to be brought to justice
Hopes European Commission ambassador


Outgoing European Commission (EC) Ambassador in Dhaka Esko Kentrschynskyj yesterday appreciated the government for its steps to hunt down the perpetrators of the August 17 serial bomb blasts.

Kentrschynskyj hoped that the criminals would be identified, brought to justice and given exemplary punishment.

The EC envoy made the remarks when he had a farewell call on Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

During the meeting, the Prime Minister said more goods like medicines, leather and leather products and jute and jute products could be imported from Bangladesh by European countries. Both of them stressed the need for enhancing trade relations between Bangladesh and the EC.

Kentrschynskyj also praised the government's various initiatives, including steps for appointment of a Tax Ombudsman and forming Independent Anti-corruption Commission, Energy Regulatory Commission and Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, which would help establish good governance and make Bangladesh a corruption-free country.

The ambassador, who worked here for over three and a half years, said a lot of progresses have taken place under Prime Minister Khaleda's leadership in various sectors of Bangladesh, including education, women empowerment, health, macro-economy and other social sectors.

He also appreciated the prime minister's initiatives and interest in development of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, where the European Commission has an involvement.

The EC envoy expressed happiness over its participation in the development and progress of Bangladesh.

In Bangladesh, the EC has many projects, including health, education, food security, capacity building in various sectors, according to an official. The European Union is a major export destination of Bangladesh.

The prime minister thanked the ambassador for his efforts to increase trade relations between Bangladesh and the EU, and hoped that it would continue.

She conveyed her best wishes to EC President Jose Manuel Durao Barroso thorough the ambassador.
