Banaful shop sealed for selling stale food

Mobile courts against adulterated food sealed off a showroom of Banaful Abhijat Confectionery and Pastry Company Ltd for selling expired products and collected Tk 2.58 lakh in fines from different restaurants, shops and hotels in Dhaka yesterday.

Meanwhile, a Barisal City Corporation (BCC) mobile court found rotten fish and eggs in seven canteens and restaurants of Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) campus and its adjacent areas. It also fined Tk 24,000 to the owner of the restaurants, our Barisal correspondent reports.

A Dhaka court led by Magistrate Rokonuddoullah raided the showroom of Banaful at Mirpur-10 and fined Tk 1 lakh to its owner AKM Kader. The showroom was sealed off.

"The showroom was selling expired products," the magistrate told The Daily Star last night. "Some of its products were expired in 2004, and they relabelled the expiry dates of some of its other products," the magistrate added.

Kader was arrested and given the chance to pay the fine within four days, said the magistrate.

The same court later raided two puffed rice factories but did not find any wrong doings. Urea which is believed to be used to make puffed rice look whiter was not found.

The court, however, brought samples for chemical tests and will give its judgement after the report.

Another court led by Magistrate Mizanur Rahman raided six restaurants and bakery shops in Adabar and Tejgaon areas yesterday. The court fined the owners Tk 33,500 and filed six cases.

The court found ammonia in biscuits at Al Madina Bakery at Adabar and fined it Tk 15,000 for the chemical and unhygienic atmosphere inside the bakery.
