Dhabi Group chief arrives, opens bank in Dhaka

The chairman of the Abu Dhabi Group, Sheikh Nahiyan Mabarak Al Nahiyan arrived in Dhaka yesterday on a two-day visit to go ahead with a $ 1 billion investment plan in Bangladesh.The Adviser to the Ministry of Energy and the BoI Executive Chairman Mahmudur Rahman received Nahiyan at the Zia International Airport. The oil-rich gulf country policymaker and also the chairman of the Dubai based Bank Al-Fallah, inaugurated the first branch of the bank in the capital's Motijheel area. Later he hosted a dinner for the clients of the bank at a city hotel. Nahiyan, also a federal minister, will call on President Iajuddin Ahmed and Prime Minister Khaleda Zia today. The Middle Eastern corporate giant Abu Dhabi Group is likely to invest in tourism, telecommunication and pharmaceutical sectors. Sources said the company is intending to set up a five-star hotel, a mobile phone company and a pharmaceutical industry as part of its overseas business expansion programme and to earn speedy return from the fast growing sectors. Earlier an advanced team of technical experts and executives headed by the chief executive officer of the Dhabi Group Bashir A Tahir arrived in the city on Saturday to do the spadework for the negotiations to be conducted by their chairman.
