Star readers respond to 2 girls' miseries


The stories of two girls published in The Daily Star yesterday brought significant responses.

A number of individuals, social and legal organisations have come forward to pay the medical expenses and provide legal assistance to the injured girls after reading their ordeals.

Morsheda Akhter, a victim of extreme cruelty by a woman for attempting to steal a guava, is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Social Welfare Department of the DMCH has declared that they would bare her treatment expenses.

Ain-o-Shalish Kendra (Ask) visited Morsheda at the DMCH and assured her of giving legal assistance.

One-Stop Crisis Centre (OCC) of the DMCH assured that they would provide shelter and legal support to her, while an unknown person donated Tk 20,000 for her.

Aklima, who was accused of theft and tortured to confession, was visited by Barrister Rehan Hussain and her associates Ashraful Islam, Zakir Hossain Bhuiyan, Shafiqul Islam, Asma Akhter and Ashok Kumar Bose assured Aklima.

Rehan assured of legal assistance to Aklima following the report by The Daily Star that she had been put into jail for crimes she did not commit.
