Shake up the IWT
A Mawaz, Dhaka
The energy sector is now under full public glare (and condemnation), with even the new Advisor to the Ministry under criticism (DS column July 10). Good for washing of dirty linen in public; as we carry too much hidden garbage for public good. The ID cards are polluted. The image of the politicians has reached a crisis point: they cannot run the parliament, the ministries, behave themselves, neutralise the bureaucracy, and stop nepotism and money laundering; (the list is too long and well publicised). Who would vow for them? Votes are for sale. How many leaders are talking about honest living? We are the number one corrupt nation in the world, but the number (percentage) of local prosecutions to contain corrupt practices is absurdly too low there should be lakhs of prosecution cases, plus purging. How many lose jobs in the public services every month or year? The figure is absurdly low. Why the defaulters are protected? Why postings can be bribed and regular transfer system is not strictly followed (for personal gains)? The political rail-track is submerged in the floodwaters of corruption. It is time to cleanse the IWT (inland water transport) sector: with too many launch capsizes and notorious grabbing of riverbanks. The authorities (no seizures, prosecutions or deterrent actions) are ignoring the design and construction of faulty launches. This is expected, with the corruption environment prevailing in the society. Who will bell the cat or throw the first stone? Next operation: NBR (hinted by the Finance Minister). The necessity of pampered PMO may be explained to the public: or, reduce it by 75 per cent. The regime is not honest, plain and simple: and its moral backbone is weak. The top leaders are showing too much leniency towards the camp followers (political interference in public affairs). The 'roads, bridges, and cargo traffic (remember, it is a delta region with more than 300 officially recognised rivers). Bring in some drastic corrections, and the election campaign would not be necessary!
