'Execute verdict in Bangabandhu Murder Case immediately'

Hundreds of people wearing black badges and carrying banners, festoons and placards came out on the street yesterday demanding immediate execution of the verdict in Bangabandhu Murder Case.They also formed a human chain in front of the Supreme Court in the city from 11:00am to 12:00 noon with a call to execute the verdict in order to ensure the rule of law in the country. Sechchhasebak League, a youth wing of the main opposition Awami League (AL), organised the programme to mark the 30th death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Speaking at the programme, its President Bahauddin Nasim said the name of Bangabandhu can never be erased from the history and the new generation will "surely find out their roots." General Secretary Pankaj Debnath called on the people to come forward to foil all the conspiracies against the execution of the verdict in the case. The organisation will stage a token hunger strike at Muktangon in the capital on August 6 to press for its demand. The Awami League has also taken up a month-long programme to mourn the deaths of Bangabandhu and his family members who were killed on August 15 in 1975. Fifteen former army officers were awarded death penalty by the trial court in the Bangabandhu Murder Case on November 8 in 1998. Later, the High Court upheld the death sentence on 12 accused. The appeal petition is still pending with the Supreme Court.
