Generate more funds to upgrade varsity edn
Speakers tell DU Alumni seminar


Speakers at a seminar yesterday called for generating more funds for universities to improve the quality of education.

Around 72 percent of the total funds goes to salary, 18 percent to utility bills and 10 percent for laboratory and library expenses, they said, adding there is no fund for research works and other requirements.

The speakers urged the government to make donations tax-free and deductable so that people are encouraged to donate to universities.

The seminar on 'Human Resource and Good Governance in the New Millennium: Role of Private and Public Universities in Bangladesh' was organised by The Dhaka University Alumni Association at the Teachers Students Centre.

Education Minister Dr M Osman Farruk spoke at the seminar as chief guest.

Vice-chancellor of Independent University Bangladesh Prof Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury, and Treasurer of Dhaka University Dr Syed Rashidul Hassan presented two keynote papers at the seminar.

Awami League leader AMA Muhith, Dhaka University Vice-chancellor SMA Faiz, politician ASM Abdur Rob and former advisor to the caretaker government Syed Manzur Elahi also spoke at the seminar.

Health Minister Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Science and ICT Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan were also present.
