SC Bar demands withdrawal of mercy order
Staff Correspondent
Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) yesterday demanded withdrawal of the presidential amnesty for Mohiuddin Ahmed Jhintu, a convict of double murder, and resignation of all involved in the clemency process. The SCBA leaders at an emergency general meeting asked the government to explain the reasons for the mercy and make public all documents of the amnesty process and all information about Jhintu's passport within August 7. The SCBA decided to stage demonstration on August 8 to protest the presidential amnesty to Jhintu, who was convicted by a martial law court in the double murder case and sentenced to death in 1982. The meeting presided over by SCBA President Mahbubey Alam at the Bar association office criticised the amnesty, saying that the presidential orders [for amnesty] go against the rule of law, justice and the constitution. Jhintu, who claimed to be a BNP leader, was granted presidential amnesty on political considerations only 10 days after his surrender to court, observed the meeting moderated by SCBA General Secretary Enayetur Rahim.
