It's all because of a guava

An eight-year-old girl has become the victim of extreme cruelty after a woman threw her into an electric pole connected to high voltage wires for attempting to steal a guava. The girl, Morsheda Akhter, narrowly escaped death but suffered serious burns and amputation after she was electrocuted near a house at north Sater Para in Narsingdhi town last Thursday. The daughter of a poor power loom worker, Morsheda is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors yesterday amputated her left arm from the elbow and three toes, two from the left foot and one from the right. Morsheda drew the attention of this reporter during a recent visit to Ward No. 33 of the hospital. Overcoming unbearable pains and with an innocent uttering of 'Mama,' Morsheda said, "My landlord's wife threw me into an electric pole for stealing a guava. Won't you write about me?" The ordeal began on Thursday afternoon when Morsheda went to the rooftop of her house, where her parents rent a ground floor room at Tk 600 per month. There she picked up a guava lying in a tub, but soon afterward the landlord's wife, whom Morsheda knows only as 'Babu's mother,' grabbed and hurled her from the roof. Hitting an electrical pole, she became entangled in a mesh of electric wires, her body dangling as the wires exploded with bangs. Hearing the noises, local managed to rescue her. She was first admitted to Narsingdhi Sadar Hospiatla on Thursday. Doctors then referred her to the DMCH the next morning. Doctors at the DMCH said they tried hard to save her arm and toes, but ultimately they had to amputate them. Morsheda's father, Khakon Mian, is struggling to deal with the ordeal, as he has already spent all Tk 10,000 that he borrowed from local people prior to coming to Dhaka with his daughter. "I do not know how my next day will pass and how I will buy my daughter's costly medicine tomorrow," Khakon told The Daily Star yesterday. Morsheda's mother, Aklima Begum, alleged that after the incident, the landlord's family and relatives, who are influential in the locality, are putting pressure on them so that they do not file any case. She also alleged that the landlord, whom she knows only as Chowdhury, and his two sons came to the DMCH and attempted to steal Morsheda's treatment file to stop them from filing any case. However, they were unable to make off with the file as Morsheda's younger brother cried to wake up his mother. Chowdhury later told her that he took the file to consult with the doctors. Narsingdhi Sadar police said no case was filed as of 8pm last night and added they know that the incident will be settled through arbitration. However, Morsheda's father said he filed a case on Monday night.
