24 killed by law enforcers in July

Odhikar, a rights watchdog, yesterday said 24 people were killed, 20 of them in "crossfire" by the law enforcment agencies across the country last month.

Among the 24, 13 were killed in police custody, six by the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), three by special police force Cobra and one each by Detective Branch (DB) of police and Village Defence Party (VDP).

Odhikar compiled the report from the news items run by leading national dailies and published it yesterday.

The report said 19 people were killed for political reasons, 90 women were raped and 12 of them were killed, and 22 people were acid-burnt.

Bangladesh Human Rights Commission in its report said 40 journalists were victims of repression, physical harassment, threats on telephone and lawsuits throughout the country last month.

Democracywatch, working on governance and human rights, said two Union Parishad (UP) representatives were killed and five others were injured.

Bangladesh Society for the Enforcement of Human Rights (BSEHR) reported 227 deaths in social violence last month.
