Shong Pala: An aboriginal genre of performing arts
Cultural Correspondent
Shong Pala is an indigenous performing art form. Enriched with our authentic cultural tradition, Shong Pala embodies various kinds of fables and the universal joy and sorrow. Despite the current trend of increasing commercialisation all around, Shong Pala continues to maintain its earthy appeal. Recently, Nripen's Shong Dal staged a Shong Pala at Muktomoncho in Jahangirnagar University, as a part of the Silver Jubilee Drama Festival 2005, arranged by Jahangirnagar Theatre. As an organiser and longtime member of the troupe Nripen says, "I started acting at a very early age. My father was my first mentor. He motivated me to organise a group which would focus the elements of our true heritage and culture. By organising this show for the university students, Jahangirnagar Theatre is helping us to uphold the vibrancy of our rural culture." The greater Mymensingh and Tangail region is regarded as the origin of Shong Pala. Nripen's Shong Dal, from Tangail District, has attained popularity in the local area for their credible performance and uncomplicated scripts that depict the rural life. The members of this group belong to various professions like farming, fishery, pottery and jewellery making. In most cases, on the stage the performers are just showcasing their own lives. "Like a tree without roots, our culture cannot sustain without its origins, that is deeply embedded in the villages. Shong Pala enables us to embellish our heritage in spite of financial hardship and other obstacles. But consequent to the aggression of modern western practices, the charm of this genre is fading away. It is high time we take pragmatic steps against these inroads and revive this heritage," adds Nripen. The body language and ready-wit in accordance with the soulful presentation of the actors seem to impress the audience. Nripen believes that the government and electronic media should step in by preserving and popularising Shong Pala to the masses.
