Expats demand right to vote
Staff Correspondent
Expatriates at a press conference yesterday urged the government and election commission to ensure their right to vote in general election. Probas, an organisation of expatriates, organised the press conference at the Reporters' Unity in the city. Probas leaders also urged the government and the EC to take effective measures to incorporate their names into the voter lists so they can cast their votes in their local areas. "Over 80 lakh expatriates are contributing to the development of the country sending remittances but now they are frustrated as their names were dropped from the voter lists," said Nazrul Islam Mintu, general secretary of Probas. Rezaul Karim Talukdar, president of Probas, said that an advisory committee should be formed with the expatriates to make the Ministry for Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment dynamic.
