A mugger was killed and two of his accomplices were injured by bullets during a 'shootout' with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) under Chandgaon Police Station in the port city yesterday.Acting on a tip-off, a Rab team waylaid a gang of seven at Mohra at about 1:00pm when they were fleeing by two CNC-run autorickshaws after snatching money and other valuables from pedestrians. As the Rab men challenged the criminals, they opened fire on the elite force, prompting them to retaliate. During the encounter, one of the criminals named Mohammad Halim, 28, was shot and died on the spot, police said. The two other members of the gang--Zakir Hossain, 25 and Shahid 28--received bullet injuries during the shootout. They are now undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College and Hospital under police custody.
