Controversially appointed RU employees demand salaries

A total of 546 employees of Rajshahi University (RU), who were appointed controversially, met the pro-vice-chancellor yesterday demanding their salaries and regularisation of their jobs.

The salaries have been held up for last three months following a lower court injunction and a high court ruling upholding it.

But a stay order of the Supreme Court on the high court ruling made the employees to receive their salaries.

They also asked the Pro-VC Prof Mamnunul Keramat about the action of the authorities concerned against the High Court ruling upholding a lower court injunction.

After the meeting, leaders of the employees' association told reporters that the Pro-VC has assured them of necessary action to arrange their salaries.

RU Treasurer Prof Abdul Zabbar Khan said it was possible for the authorities to provide the employees with salaries till June, but it would be difficult to arrange their salaries in coming months due to fund crisis.

Some of the employees have threatened the journalists working at RU for not publishing report in their favour.

"We are not demonstrating, we are discussing with the authorities," they added.

The leaders said if the journalists continue reporting against them, they would face dire consequences.

Zahirul Islam, a joint convenor of the employees' association, told this correspondent that previous verdicts went against the employees for 'a negative reporting' in national dailies.

The journalists have expressed their concern over the threats and verbally informed the proctor of the matter.
