Graft case against 2 cops sent for ACC approval

A Dhaka court on June 30 sent the graft case against two sub-inspectors (SI) posted at the General Recording Office (GRO) of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM) Court to the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) for its sanction to proceed with the case.

After hearing both the sides, Judge Mohammad Momin Ullah of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court issued the order.

The same court on June 24 last year directed the CMM to institute a judicial inquiry into the graft case against the two police officials and submit report on the allegations against them.

Following the directive, the CMM's court recorded statements of 21 witnesses and submitted the inquiry report to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court suggesting legal actions against the accused.

Advocate MA Kamrul Hassan Khan Aslam of the Dhaka Bar Association (DBA) on June 23 last year filed the case with the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's court against SIs Mohammad Nasim Khan and Mohammad Oli Uddin.

Over 60 lawyers of DBA on June 9 the same year alleged that the two SIs often demanded bribes from the lawyers and clients in the name of magistrate for fixing bail for the accused.

The two officials amassed huge amount of money from litigants and lawyers in the name of fixing bails and leaking case documents and evidence to the defendants, they said.

The lawyers had urged the police and the home ministry authorities to withdraw the two police officers from the CMM's court and mete out exemplary punishment after investigation. But the authorities ignored the matter.

They lawyers had also apprised the chief justice, home minister, home secretary, inspector general of police and Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner of the alleged misdeeds by the two.
