Violence Against Women
Awareness campaign launched

Nari Maitree, a women's rights organisation, yesterday launched an awareness campaign to resist violence against women.

The campaign with a slogan 'We can resist all kinds of violence against women' will continue till July 20, said the organisers at a press conference in the city.

It will be conducted in five wards of the city through Jari song, area-based discussions, rickshaw paintings and public opinion survey.

Establishing information centre, broadcasting message on cable televisions and installation of billboards also form a part of the campaign.

The aim of the campaign is to challenge the social attitudes towards women and to promote coordination among local, regional, national and international programmes to this end.

Referring to a study, the organisers said 80 percent of incidents of violence against women take place in the family. Even in towns, 60 percent of women are beaten by their husband while 20 percent fell victim to sexual harassment and 67 percent were tortured mentally.

"Domestic violence forms a part of the violence against women and its range is vast. In our patriarchal society, repression of women and deceit by their male counterparts are tantamount to domestic violence," said Shaheen Aktar, executive director of Nari Maitree.

Early marriage, dowry, poverty, illiteracy, superstitions and traditional attitudes towards women are the main factors responsible for domestic violence, she said.

Ismat Ara Mustafa, Tabassum Ara, Masuda Begum, Nazrana Yasmin and Nahid Sultana were present at the press conference.
