Tk 1,247 cr Budget to be Announced Today
DCC to increase taxes, fees in different sectors

The Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) is going to announce its highest ever budget of Tk 1,247 crore for 2005-06 fiscal year with a revenue earning target of Tk 432 crore through increasing taxes and fees in different sectors.Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka will announce the budget at Mahanagar Natya Mancha today. Like the previous year, the DCC has allocated Tk 17.5 crore for mosquito control activities and purchasing necessary equipment, and Tk seven crore for special cleaning drive. The budget of this fiscal will be Tk 378.27 crore more than the revised budget of 2004-05 fiscal, DCC sources said. The DCC has set the revenue target of Tk 432 crore for this fiscal while the revenue earning of the previous fiscal was Tk 271.6 crore against a target of Tk 391.01 crore. Although the DCC has failed to meet the revenue target of the previous fiscal, it has increased further the revenue target for its different sectors. Of the expected revenue earning for this fiscal, the DCC expects to get Tk 210 crore in holding, conservancy and lighting tax, Tk 37 crore in bazaar selami, Tk 25 crore in rent from bazaars and Nagar Bhaban, Tk 35 crore in trade licence fees, Tk 13 crore from cattle market, Tk 30 crore in road digging fees and Tk 35 crore in estate handing over tax. With regard to the revenue expenditure, the DCC has allocated Tk 970.97 crore for different development works. It expects to receive a fund of Tk 100 crore from the government and Tk 550.22 crore under different foreign-aided projects. In the last fiscal year, the government also promised a fund of Tk 100 crore for development works but provided only Tk 36.35 crore. The development works include construction of different infrastructures, museums, educational institutions, land acquisition and development of low lands and procurement of logistics. The DCC has lowered the revenue target in regard to rickshaw licence fees, entertainment tax and birth, marriage and death registration fees. It has set an earning target of Tk 1.75 crore in rickshaw licence fees against Tk six crore in the last fiscal. However, the taxes on lease on bus-truck terminals, river ghats, public toilets, slaughterhouse, children parks and graveyards and crematoriums would remain the same as in the last fiscal.
