Cultural programme to create awareness about HIV/Aids

Let There Be Light, a cultural forum, has taken up a project for the prevention of HIV/Aids.

Under the project, the organisation will hold cultural programmes from July to December at 42 spots in and around the city to create mass awareness about the deadly disease.

Announcing the programme at a press conference at the National Press Club in the city yesterday, Executive Director of Let There Be Light Ranjit Roy said such a project has been taken for the first time in the country.

"It is comparatively easy to make general people aware of HIV/Aids through cultural programme" he said while reading out a statement.

The programme will include folk songs, poetry recital and street dramas on HIV/Aids, Ranjit added.

He said such cultural programme will also be organised at ten spots in Sylhet under the second phase.

Under another project, Let There Be Light is going to provide male sex workers with training in computer and handicrafts with a view to bringing them back to normal life, Ranjit said.

"We have to build up a strong social movement to prevent HIV/Aids which poses a serious threat to our society," said Munmun Ahmed, chairperson of Let There Be Light.

Chief Coordinator of the organisation Mannan Akand and member Abul Kasem were also present at the press conference.
