DU shut as BCL strike begins

No class was held at Dhaka University (DU) yesterday on the first day of the two-day strike enforced by seven opposition-backed student organisations led by pro-Awami League Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).

The students combine has enforced the strike to press home its five-point demand including expulsion, arrest and punishment of the pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists for attacking students on the campus on May 28.

Academic activities at the DU were scheduled to resume yesterday after a month-long summer vacation throughout June.

DU authorities had earlier postponed all the examinations scheduled for yesterday and today in the wake of the strike.

The BCL yesterday took out a procession and held a rally on the campus. Speakers at the rally threatened to come out on an indefinite strike if their demands were not met immediately.

BCL President Liaqat Sikder, acting General Secretary Saifuzzaman Shekhor, Shariful Kabir Swapan, among others, addressed the rally.
