Kaptai power generation drops to new low as water level falls

The generation of electricity at the Kaptai hydroelectric power station has dropped down to 60MW a day due to a fall in water level at the dam point.Plant officials said the generation is the lowest since its inception in the 1960s. They blamed it on the drought-like situation, which continues despite arrival of the monsoon a few days ago. "The water level usually stands over 84.16 MSL (Mean Sea Level) during the monsoon. But today (Saturday) it was recorded at 74.25 MSL," Plant Manager Shafiqul Islam told The Daily Star. "Friday's generation of 60MW is the lowest ever since the plant had gone into operation," he said. "The plant's contribution to the national grid has been falling since March, as it lacks adequate water reserve in Kaptai Lake," the official added.
