Law enforcers kill 236 in 6 months

Law enforcers have killed 236 people across the country in the last six months, and 209 of them met their end in 'crossfire', says a report by Odhikar, a rights organisation.Among the victims, 178 were killed by police, 52 by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), three by Cheetah and Cobra and three by other law enforcement agencies, the report says. As many as 157 people were killed in 'crossfire' with police, 48 with the Rab and four with Cheetah and other law enforcers from January 1 to June 30. Fifty-two people were killed by the law enforcers during the corresponding time last year. Moreover, 41 people died in custody at different police stations and jails, the report says. Odhikar has compiled the report on the basis of news items published by different national dailies. As many as 168 were killed in political violence, while 3,876 were injured, 793 arrested and seven kidnapped. One journalist was killed, 62 were injured, seven arrested, one kidnapped, 20 harassed, seven assaulted, 93 threatened and 34 accused in cases. Eighty-nine people including 47 women and 17 children were acidburnt across the country, the report adds. It says 445 women were raped and 78 of them were killed, while five committed suicide. It adds that 109 women were killed for dowry and 52 were tortured, eight acidburnt and eight committed suicide. As many as 619 children faced torture and 159 of them were killed, 160 raped, 57 injured, 100 kidnapped, 45 trafficked, 47 went missing and 21 took their lives.
