AFP, Chester-le-Street
Graham Thorpe became the eighth England cricketer to appear in 100 Tests when he was selected for the second and final Test against Bangladesh at the Riverside here Friday. Five of the surviving England players to have appeared in 100 Tests -- Alec Stewart, Michael Atherton, David Gower, Ian Botham and Geoff Boycott -- were involved in a pre-match presentation ceremony that saw 35-year-old Surrey left-hander Thorpe receive a commemorative bat. Graham Gooch, the other living England cricketer with over 100 caps was coaching Essex. The late England batsman Colin Cowdrey was the first player to appear in 100 Tests back in 1968, with Thorpe the 32nd overall.
