Ahab threatens to teach Jamaat-BNP 'a lesson'

Ahle Hadith Andolon Bangladesh (Ahab) leaders at a public meeting here yesterday threatened to teach the ruling BNP-Jamaat alliance 'a lesson' in the next general elections if the four Ahab leaders including its Ameer Asadullah Al Galib are not released from jail immediately.

"Election victory of the two major parties (BNP-Jamaat) in many constituencies depends on our support. We will teach them a lesson if our leaders are not freed", acting Ahab Ameer Muhammad Muslehuddin said at the meeting held under police protection.

Rajshahi Ahab chief AK Azad chaired the meeting, also addressed by Khulna Ahab General Secretary Zahangir Alam, Shakhawat Hossain, SM A Latif and Abu Taher.

The speakers blamed Jamaat-e-Islami for the arrest of their leaders and said Jamaat provoked the government to go for such action to hide its involvement in violence in the name of Islam.

Ahab will hold a rally in Dhaka on June 17 to press the demand for release of its leaders, and go to the international court, if necessary, they said.

They also slated the media role and displayed placards that read 'stop media terrorism'.

The acting ameer claimed that many leaders including Rajshahi Mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu MP, Post and Telecommunications Minister Aminul Haque and lawmakers Abu Hena and Harun-ur Rashid got elected with Ahab support.

He also criticised the role of NGOs and said they caused moral degradation of many women. "The NGOs might have links to bomb blasts," he added.
