Dhaka, Delhi to hold FS-level talks June 21

Bangladesh and India will hold foreign secretary level consultations in New Delhi on June 21 to review the entire range of bilateral relations between the two countries.

Foreign Secretary Hema-yetuddin told UNB yesterday that he will leave for the Indian capital on June 20 to attend the meeting.

The meeting will cover issues concerning trade, land boundary demarcation, exchange of enclaves and territories in adverse possession, sharing of water of common seven rivers including the Teesta, and security concerns.

The last foreign secretary level meeting was held in Dhaka during April 28-30 in 2003 between Kanwal Sibal and Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, then foreign secretaries of India and Bangladesh.

Asked about India's request seeking Bangladesh's support for the UN Security Council membership, Hemayet said, "We've not yet firmed up our position."

Four countries -- Brazil, India, Germany and Japan -- have sought Bangladesh's support for the UN Security Council membership.

Earlier, Bangladesh extended her support to Japan for entry to the extended UN Security Council.

Meanwhile, officials in Dhaka said interactions between the two close-door neighbours are encouraging in terms of trade and commerce, investment and people-to-people contact.

Some small irritants existing between the two countries could be resolved through mutual understanding and discussion, they said.

Bangladesh might focus on how to reduce the yawning trade gap with India through duty-free access of Bangladesh products to the Indian market and strengthening trade with India's northeastern states, the officials noted.

Dhaka also wants early resolution of the sharing of waters of the common rivers as Bangladesh is facing the problems of drought and desertification.

On its part, India may raise the issues of border and suspected "insurgent camps" in Bangladesh territory.

The foreign secretary-level meeting will also help to create a positive climate before holding of the 13th Saarc summit in Dhaka in November, officials said.
