Rab arrests top criminal Arman

Arman Khan, one of the 23 top listed criminals of the country, was arrested by the members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday.Confirming the arrest, Rab and police sources said the members of Rab-4 arrested Arman and two others at a flat near Bangladesh Medical College and Hospital in Dhanmondi at about 9:30am with three firearms and 150 bullets. However, Director of Rab-4 Saber Sharif told The Daily Star last night that he would not make any comment on it. On December 27 in 2001, the government announced a bounty of Tk 50,000 for information on the whereabouts of Arman. Arman, who was the second-in-command of another top listed criminal Liakot Hossain Hawlader, went into hiding with other sidekicks following declaration of the reward by the home ministry. Kolkata police arrested Liaqat, Arman and four others in Kolkata New Market area on November 19, 2002 with two Italian-made 9mm pistol. But they got released from an Indian court. Arman ruled the underworld in Moghbazar-Malibagh-Eskaton areas after Liakot was arrested by Rapid Action Battalion on October 2, 2003. Liakot is now in the Dhaka Central Jail. The sources seeking anonymity also said after the arrest, Rab members went on a manhunt for his accomplices, and to recover deadly weapons they have. Son of Ainul of 603 Bara Moghbazar in the capital, Arman is an accused in 13 cases including 11 for murder. Arman and his family grabbed a house in Moghbazar area where they lived for 30 years. Recently the locals, with the help of police, evicted them from the house.
