2 'robbers' killed in 'crossfire'

Two alleged highway robbers were killed in 'crossfire' between their accomplices and police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Rajendrapur in Chouddagram upazila in the early hours yesterday.Rab sources said they arrested Mainuddin alias Munaya, 32, son of Abdul Majid of Kalashir village, and Mehedi Hasan alias Munna Dakat, 35, son of Abu Tahir Miah, of Balgor Miahbari village, from Chouddagram on Monday. A joint team of Rab-7 and police were taking them to Kathalia village to seize firearms when they came under fire at about 2:00am, they added. The law-enforcers returned fire and drove away the attackers. The Rab said after the 30-minute gunfight, they found the bullet-hit bodies of Mainuddin and Mehedi. Rab constable Mashiur Rahman was injured in the shootout, they added. The team seized two LG, one SBBL gun, one pipegun,10 bullets and seven used cartridges from the spot. Mainuddin and Mehedi were accused of committing highway robberies, murder and extortion, police said.
