Zoo watch
Dhaka Zoo's unknown attraction

The mysterious work of nature often sees animals born with strange physical features. These animals however do not survive in most cases.

Like the calf born with two heads and three eyes in Jamalpur in 1992. By the time the Dhaka Zoo authorities collected it, the calf was already dead. So they turned it into a stuffed animal and visitors can find it at the zoo museum.

The calf is one of the main attractions of the Dhaka Zoo Museum. Besides, there are many other stuffed animals and birds which people can enjoy.

"We have 240 kinds of stuffed animals at the museum. Some are not available alive in the zoo," said Abdul Aziz, taxidermist at Dhaka Zoo Museum.

Some of the animals that are not available alive but can be found at the museum are dolphin, camel, gigantic green turtle, giraffe, anteater, golden cat, gorilla, flying scurrile and Siberian tiger.

"Most of these species were in our Zoo once upon a time. But they could not survive for long due to the weather," said Abdul Aziz.

He also informed that dolphins have been brought alive many times but due to the lack of the perfect mixture of saline water, they died. The camel, giraffe, red panda, green turtle also passed away after surviving for a short period at the Dhaka Zoo. Aziz said they had also collected many animals and birds dead and then stuffed them to present to the spectators.

"We had received the golden cat dead. The tribal people of Chittagong Hill Tracts donated it to the museum in mid 90s. The Flying scurrile also came in dead. So far we have not managed to collect such scurrile alive."

Many small animals have been preserved in glass jars through formalin. Eggs of different birds are also preserved at the museum.

A fish aquarium is there inside the museum compound. Established in 1994, It has about fifty species of colourful fishes in thirty gigantic aquariums. Apart from the well known angel fish, goldfish, koi carp, rainbow shark, red sword tail, night fish and comet red there are also many unknown species like the guppy, tigerlouch, black moon, yellow turtle, elbino shark, tiger shark and yellow turtle in the aquarium.

"Piranha is a monstrous fish and the centre of attraction at the aquarium. It takes a huge quantity of food everyday," said fish aquarium attendant Mohammad Rafiqullah.

"I did not know that there was a fish named Oscar. The amazing thing is that this fish changes colour at regular intervals," said Abdul Baten, a visitor to the aquarium.

Most of the visitors said the fish aquarium was an added bonus as they did not know about its existence before.

"Many people would come to the zoo only to visit the museum and fish aquarium if they knew it existed," said a visitor.

"We do not only taxidermy the animals that have died at the zoo. If someone donates any rare animal or bird, we are happy to preserve them too," said Dr. N C Banik, deputy curator of Dhaka Zoo.

The zoo authorities informed that they were going to renovate and extend the museum and the fish aquarium soon.

"We have submitted a plan to the concerned ministry for renovation of the entire zoo that includes expansion and renovation of the museum and aquarium also," said Banik.

Anyone can come the zoo museum and the aquarium during the visiting hours of the zoo. Entrance fee is Taka two.
