Hoax of Hijacking Aircraft
Court records statement of mentally disturbed man

A Dhaka court yesterday recorded judicial statement of a mentally disturbed man arrested for disclosing techniques to hijacking an aircraft.

As per provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), no court can record statement if any accused seems to be mentally disturbed during the time of recording confessional statement.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Shafiqul Islam recorded the statement of the accused Ruhul Aziz Mukul when Hasan Hafizur Rahman, the investigation officer (IO) produced him before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on completion of his one-day remand.

After recording Mukul's statement, the magistrate said in his order that he seems to be mentally disturbed and did not give his statement willfully. When the magistrate asked Mukul at his chamber whether he was tortured during the remand, he replied that he was tortured.

After recording his statement, Mukul was sent to the Dhaka Central Jail.

Airport Police arrested Mukul from Zia International Airport (ZIA) on Saturday after he told the crew of a domestic flight of Bangladesh Biman that a gang employed him to hijack the aircraft.

On his arrival at the ZIA on a flight from Jessore at about 10:30am on Saturday, Ruhul Aziz Mukul, 32, told the crew that a terrorist group had trained him how to hijack an aircraft without any firearms and explosives.

Mukul then asked them to take him to police custody saying that the group would harm him for his failure to hijack the aircraft, police said.
