27 killed in 'crossfire' last month

Twenty-seven people were killed in 'crossfire' with the Rapid Action Battalion and police last month, according to a report of Bangladesh Bar Council.Besides, 293 more people were killed in different incidents in the country during the period, the report said. Of the victims, seven people were killed in political violence, 41 committed suicide and one person was killed in police custody. The Bar Council prepared the report on the basis of newspaper reports. Eleven women and children were killed after rape, 15 housewives killed over dowry and eight others died following torture by their husbands, the report said. Besides, 50 women and girls fell victim to rape, 13 to domestic violence and four to fatwa. The report said 40 people were injured in bomb attacks and 30 others in acid attacks. Also, 26 people were abducted during the period. Five journalists were injured in attacks and four others received threats, the report added.x Bangladesh Nari Progati Sangha, in its report, said 189 women and girls fell victim to repression last month. Of them, 81 women and girls were killed and 42 raped. In another survey, the DemocracyWatch said two Union Parishad chairmen were killed -- one of them dies in 'crossfire' -- during the period. Cases were filed against five UP chairmen and one UP member for their alleged involvement in murder, extortion, torture of businessmen, cheating and harassment of government officials. An UP chairman was arrested for throwing acid on a child while another was sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case, the report said.
