Minorities demand deployment of army, Rab
STAFF CORRESPONDENT, Ctg
Religious minorites in a memorandum to the election commission (EC) yesterday placed a 5-point demand for a free and fair environment in the May 9 Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) election. They called for deployment of army and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) three days before and as many days as possible after the polls in the minority-dominated areas. Leaders of Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council submitted the memorandum yesterday afternoon to Returning Officer and the Additional Divisional Commissioner Golam Quddus on behalf of over one-and-half lakh minority voters. In the memorandum, they sought assurance of a peaceful atmosphere so that the minority voters could go to the polling centres to cast votes in favour of their candidates without any fear. It also demanded measures to resist casting of fake votes to ensure the right of each and every minority voter. The leaders expressed grave concerns at the 'reported conspiracies' centring the polling centres at the minority-dominated areas. They said the minority voters are determined to franchise their constitutional rights at any cost for the sake of democracy and sought full cooperation from the EC in this regard. Engineer Parimol Chowdhury, Ranjit Chowdhury, Advocate Subhash Chandra Lala, Advocate Nani Gopal Datta, Advocate Rana Das Gupta, poet Arun Das Gupta, Professor Pradip Chowdhury and Advocate Sabuj Das were present among others during the submission of the memorandum.
