6 killed, 25 injured in road accidents


Six people, including two schoolgirls, were killed and 25 others injured in separate road accidents in Narayanganj and Rajbari districts yesterday.

Our Narayanganj Correspondent adds, two schoolgirls were killed and 15 others injured at the Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road in Narayanganj as a bus turned turtle in front of the Shibu Market.under Fatulla thana yesterday morning.

The accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound bus tried to overtake another bus.

Witnesses said Soniya, 13, a student of class seven of Hazi Kamor Ali High School, died on the spot while her classmate Shyamoli,14, and rickshawpuller Abdur Rashid,40, were seriously injured when the bus fell on them. The girls were going to school. Later Shyamoli succumbed to her injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Thirteen passengers of the bus were also injured in the accident.

The traffic on the road was disrupted for half an hour as students of local schools staged a demonstration on the road demanding exemplary punishment to the driver. They also submitted a memorandum to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Narayanganj Sadar.

BSS adds, two passersby were killed on the spot when a bus knocked them down at Jatra Mura on Dhaka-Sylhet Road under Rupganj police station at about 10:00am last night.

The woman and the boy met with the accident when they were crossing the road.

The Sylhet-bound bus fled after the accident. The identity of the victims could not be known yet.

UNB adds, A young man was killed and 10 people were injured when a bus rammed a bicycle and hit pedestrians at Stadium Road in the Rajbari town yesterday afternoon.

Police said Faruq Hossain, 20, of Borochar Beninagar in Sadar upazila died on the spot when a Daulatdia-bound bus, coming from Kushtia, smashed his bicycle.

Ten pedestrians were also injured when the bus hit them from behind. Of them, Abdul Aziz, 35, M Alim, 17, and Anwar Hossain were admitted to Sadar Hospital in critical condition.

Police seized the bus but could not arrest its driver and his helper.

Meanwhile, An NGO officer was killed when a speeding truck hit his bicycle at Puranapail on Joypurhat Hili road yesterday.

Police said NGO officer Ahsan Habib, 35, of Duripara in Sadar upazila died on the spot when the truck knocked down his bicycle while he was going to his office at about 5.30pm.
