Admission fees increased upto 81pc in 5 years at DU

The Dhaka University (DU) authorities have increased the admission fees of different faculties ranging from 37 to 81 percent in last five years without providing any extra facilities to the students.

The admission fees have been increased by around 81 percent in business studies faculty, about 38 percent in arts and social science faculties including Mathematics and Statistics departments and about 37 percent in science faculty.

The authorities took Tk 4185 as admission fee from a student of business studies faculty in 2004-05 academic session which was Tk 4060 in 2003-04 session, Tk 3410 in 2002-03 session, Tk 2410 in 2001-02 session, and 2310 in 2000-01 session.

A student of science faculty paid Tk 3270 as admission fee in 2004-05 academic session which was Tk 3145 in 2003-04 session, Tk 2495 in 2002-03 session, Tk 2495 in 2001-02 session, and 2395 in 2000-01 session.

Students of arts and social science faculties including Mathematics and Statistics departments had to pay Tk 3185 as admission fee in 2004-05 academic session which was Tk 3060 in 2003-04 session, Tk 2410 in 2002-03 session, Tk 2410 in 2001-02 session, and 2310 in 2000-01 session.

Besides, the DU authorities are taking Tk 120 (60+60) as hall students' union and university students' union fees from the students although these have no existence after 1990.

The students also pay Tk 250 as Internet fee, but they have no opportunities to use Internet once a year.

Moreover, almost all the departments of the university take additional money from the students under different names such as department development funds, computer lab fees, and students welfare fees at the time of their yearly admission.

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Samajtantrik Chhatra Front (SCF) have been demonstrating on the campus demanding immediate reduction of the admission fees.

The SCF yesterday submitted a memorandum to Vice-chancellor Prof SMA Faiz to press home their demand.

Golam Mortuza, a student of mass communications and journalism department, said though the university authorities increase the admission and other fees every year, they have not increased students' facilities.

Hasibur Rahman, another student, said the authorities have not increased transport facilities although they have increased the fees.

DU Treasurer Prof Syed Rashidul Hasan told The Daily Star that the authorities have increased the admission fees considering overall situation of the university, and for the greater interests of the students and developments.

"The government has clearly told us that they would not allocate any funds for the transportation and construction of residential buildings for the teachers and students, and for this the university authorities have increased different fees," he added.

He said the authorities would provide Internet facilities for the students of every residential hall soon.

"We have already introduced broadband line on the campus and provided it to every department," he added.

The treasurer said they have been taking additional fees for transportation as the maintenance costs of the university buses has been increased due to old ages of the buses.

"Besides, we have also expanded bus routes, and for this the transportation costs have automatically increased," he added.

He said they would buy soon buses for the students and microbuses for the teachers.
