One to die, 3 get life for double murder in Sylhet

A murderer was condemned to death and three others were sentenced to life term imprisonment by a court here on Saturday in a sensational double murder case. The convict who got death penalty is Soyful Alam while three other convicts who were awarded life term rigorous imprisonment (RI) are Koramot Ali, his wife Aleya Begum and their son Masud Alam. Each of them were fined Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer three months more RI. Following a dispute over land of a mosque, an arbitrary meeting was progressing at village Bohorgram in Golapganj Police Station (PS) on March 8 in 2003. At one stage of the meeting, Koramot Ali was rebuked by the 'panchayet' chief and other leading persons of the area. Being infuriated, Koramot's sons Masud Alam and Soyful Alam ran down to their house when their mother Aleya Begum handed over them gun. On return to the mosque, they fired gunshots aiming at Nazrul Islam and Nanu Miah. Both of them sustained critical injuries. They died on way to the hospital. District and Sessions Judge of Sylhet, ANM Bashirullah pronounced the verdict.
